Punjabi cinema is making headway into the global arena. The actors and filmmakers are experimenting with new stories and ideas. Audiences are also ready to accept new concepts and do not shy away from spending money if a story clicks with them. Here’s a list of 10 films that showed Pollywood means business and what really made the audiences go out and watch them:


1.       10. AMBARSARIYA (2016)

 


DILJIT DOSANJH... need more reason? Well, three beautiful heroines: Navneet Kaur Dhillon, Monica Gill and Lauren Gottlieb. Direction by Mandeep Kumar. Some thrill, some romance and lots of comedy.... perfect recipe for a film to earn 24.9 crores.

 

2.       9. LOVE PUNJAB (2016)


The story of family ties, a couple trying to discover love and Punjab won hearts all over. Add Sargun Mehta and Amrinder Gill to the mix and you can’t help fall in love with Love Punjab. Manvir Johal, the kid artist, is a treat to watch too. The film has earned Rupees 25.2 crores worldwide.

 

3.       8. SAJJAN SINGH RANGROOT (2018)

                      

Diljit Dosanjh came back to his roots with a period war film glorifying the bravery of Sikh soldiers during World War I. Beautifully shot, authentically narrated and singing the praises of war heroes, this Pankaj Batra film earned Rs 25.5 crores.

 

4.       7. JATT & JULIET 2 (2013)

 

Diljit Dosanjh with Neeru Bajwa is like SRK and Kajol of Bollywood. Film gotta be loved by everyone. But when the story is gripping and Anurag Singh is at the helm, the movie has got to earn Rupees 28 crores. Now we are eagerly waiting for Shadaa too.

 

5.       6. QISMAT (2018)

 

First the song, and then the movie gave us chills! Sargun Mehta can cry on cue, we all were aware of that. But we had never thought that Ammy Virk would make us cry like babies. This one has drama to the hilt. From being a musical masterpiece to being a story that has changed audience experience for better, Qismat has changed qismat of many, including Shri Narota Ji Productions who have bagged 28+ crore rupees till date.


6.       5. ANGREJ (2015)

 

This one had pre-partition Punjab. This one had Amrinder Gill. It was also the film that brought a gem to the Punjabi cinema: Sargun Mehta. What else would a movie need to bag Rupees 30.7 crores? Just a beautiful and simple story that was relatable beyond timelines.

 

7.       4. MANJE BISTRE (2017)

 

Punjabi shaadi, all the chaos, and some romance: Manje Bistre was written by Gippy Grewal, it was produced by Gippy Grewal. It starred the king Gippy Grewal too. The film collected Rupees 31.7 crores. We are looking forward to its sequel in 2019 now.

 

8.       3. SARDAAR JI (2015)

 

Diljit Dosanjh with Neeru Bajwa in a story about a ghost hunter: well, just the pairing did the wonders. Diljit Dosanjh captured hearts worldwide while capturing ghosts in Punjab. The film captured Rs 37.6 crores while capturing love globally.

 

9.       2. CHAAR SAHIBZAADE (2014)

 

The film was in news for all the wrong reasons before its release. But once it hit theatres, it became a phenomenon. The movie brought animation to Punjabi cinema, received love from the kids and older gens alike for telling the tale of bravehearts of Sikhism.

 

10.   1. CARRY ON JATTA 2 (2018)

 

Gippy Grewal knows what clicks with Punjabi audience the best. He reprised Jass from the 2012 prequel and along came the madhatters Binnu Dhillon, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Jaswinder Bhalla, Karamjit Anmol, Upasana Singh. Sonam Bajwa played the female lead. Carry On Jatta 2 created history right in the first month of 2018 by collecting a whopping sum of 56.3 crore rupees globally.
