The accident happened when the Lokmanya Tilak Express collided with another train because of heavy fog.
At least 15 passengers were killed when five coaches of Mumbai-Bhubaneshwar Lokmanya Tilak Express derailed. Three other coaches of the train were displaced after colliding with the goods train because of heavy fog in Cuttack in Odisha on Thursday.
The railways' officials claimed 25 passengers were injured in the accident. However, later it was reported that four passengers suffered major injuries and 11 received minor injuries.
The passengers who suffered majorly were rushed to Cuttack Medical College where they were declared out of danger.
As per the officials, the accident happened when the passenger train hit the goods train around 7 am between Salagaon and Nergundi stations.
Heavy fog is being stated as the reason of the accident, though the speedometers of both the trains have been seized for further investigation.
East Coast Railway spokesperson, JP Mishra said, “East Coast Railway acknowledges with deep gratitude help of nearby locals and villagers who have displayed great humanitarian values and come to the rescue of injured passengers.”
