Delhi’s Air Quality Plunges to Alarming Levels, Triggering Severe Health Concerns
  • PublishedNovember 6, 2023

Delhi, India is grappling with a severe air pollution crisis as pollution levels have once again surged into the ‘severe plus’ category, making it the most polluted city in the nation. The ongoing toxic haze, now spanning six consecutive days, is primarily attributed to unfavorable wind conditions, particularly calm winds during the night. Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) readings have soared beyond 500 in various parts of the capital, with the Wazirpur monitoring station recording an alarming AQI of 859 at noon.

The most concerning aspect of this crisis is the excessive PM2.5 concentration, currently at 96.2 times the World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines, posing severe health risks. PM2.5, fine inhalable particles with diameters of 2.5 micrometres or smaller, can penetrate the bloodstream, leading to adverse health impacts.

In response to this dire situation, primary schools in Delhi will remain closed until November 10. Authorities are urging citizens to take necessary precautions, such as wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities. The government is actively working to address the pollution crisis, with measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving air quality.
