Election Commission Issues Notice to Rahul Gandhi for Derogatory Remarks Against PM Modi
  • PublishedNovember 24, 2023

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following a complaint from the BJP regarding his recent comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During a public meeting in Rajasthan, Gandhi allegedly used derogatory terms, likening the Prime Minister to a “Jaibkatra (pick pocket)” and a “Panauti (jinx).” The ECI cited these remarks as unbecoming of a senior leader and potentially in violation of the Representation of People’s Act, IPC section 499, and Model Code of Conduct.

The Commission, emphasizing its concerns about the declining political discourse, urged Gandhi to explain why actions for the alleged violations should not be initiated. Failure to respond by November 25 may result in appropriate action by the Commission. This notice follows similar actions against other Congress leaders for purported violations during the ongoing campaign.
