India-Russia Relations: A Journey from Distrust to Steadfast Partnership
  • PublishedDecember 29, 2023

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the enduring strength of India-Russia relations, highlighting their evolution from historical differences to a resilient and mutually beneficial partnership.

Dating back to 1947, the relationship encountered skepticism under Stalin’s Soviet Union due to ideological disparities. However, post-Independence, India’s non-aligned stance paved the way for formal diplomatic ties, fostering a strategic alliance rooted in mutual respect.

Key milestones, including Jawaharlal Nehru’s pivotal visit in 1955, signified a turning point, bolstering economic and defence cooperation. The Soviet Union’s support during critical junctures, such as the Sino-Indian conflict in 1962 and the Indo-Pak War in 1971, solidified the alliance.

Today, India-Russia relations continue to flourish, marked by robust trade and strategic convergence. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar reaffirmed the depth of this partnership, rooted not just in politics or economics but in profound mutual interests and cooperation.
