Government’s Scrap Selling Initiative Nets Rs 1,163 Crore, Clears 96 Lakh Files

In a monumental drive spearheaded by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, the Indian government has successfully raised Rs 1,163 crore since October 2021 through the sale of scrap. This initiative, encompassing a one-month cleanliness campaign in October 2023, saw a remarkable disposal of 96 lakh physical files from central government offices, liberating 355 lakh square feet of space.

The Ministry of Railways led contributions with Rs 225 crore, followed by Defence at Rs 168 crore and other significant contributions from Petroleum, Coal, and other ministries. This effort not only generated revenue but also led to the repurposing of vacated spaces for recreational and beneficial purposes.

Secretary V Srinivas highlighted the success of “Special Campaign 3.0” in reducing pendency, achieving nearly 100% targets in grievances redressal, records management, and MPs’ references. The Swachhata practices will now be institutionalized, with three hours per week dedicated to such activities across government offices.

This comprehensive campaign, aligned with Prime Minister Modi’s vision, signifies India’s largest drive for cleanliness in office spaces and a significant shift towards digital records with over 96% e-file adoption rate.
