Imran Khan Faces Contempt Charges by Election Commission of Pakistan
  • PublishedJanuary 3, 2024

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been charged with contempt of the electoral commission, as confirmed by his lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha. This development comes amid a tumultuous period for Khan, embroiled in legal and political battles since his ousting in April 2022.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) initiated proceedings against Khan and other leaders of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Khan, a revered figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, denies all allegations, asserting that he’s being targeted by the military, an allegation the military refutes.

Recent legal proceedings have added to Khan’s challenges. Despite his popularity, a high court upheld his disqualification from contesting future elections, further complicating his political trajectory.

The 71-year-old, once a cricket icon, has been absent from public view since his imprisonment in August for alleged unlawful activities during his tenure from 2018 to 2022.
