Second Sikh Activist’s House in Canada Hit by Gunfire This Month, Raising Concerns of Targeted Attacks
  • PublishedFebruary 13, 2024

The residence of Sikh activist Inderjit Singh Gosal in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, has been targeted by gunfire, marking the second such incident this month and raising concerns of a coordinated campaign against Sikh separatists. Gosal, a vocal supporter of the Khalistan movement seeking an independent Sikh homeland separate from India, had a construction crew discover a bullet hole in a window of his unfinished house on Monday. Peel Regional police confirmed the presence of one bullet hole, stating it was “too early” to definitively link the shooting to Gosal’s Khalistan activism. This incident follows Gosal’s announcement of a pro-Khalistan rally outside the Indian consulate in Toronto on February 17. Gosal collaborates with Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, recently targeted in a foiled assassination attempt in the US and serving as the chief legal counsel for Sikhs for Justice. The Khalistan movement gained attention after the assassination of Canadian activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, linked to the Indian government, fueling tensions between Canada and India. Despite India’s global pressure campaign, Sikh activism in Canada persists, organizing symbolic referendums and rallies. A previous shooting on February 1 targeted the house of Simranjeet Singh, a close associate of Nijjar, in Surrey, British Columbia.
