Congress Government in Himachal Pradesh in Crisis as 6 MLAs Cross-Vote, BJP in Touch

The Congress government in Himachal Pradesh is facing an existential crisis following the cross-voting of six MLAs in the Rajya Sabha polls, with reports suggesting their possible inclination towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu denied rumors of his resignation amid the turmoil and expressed confidence in proving the majority in the assembly.

Amidst chaos in the assembly, Speaker suspended 15 BJP MLAs for misbehavior, leading to the adjournment of the house. Vikramaditya Singh’s resignation from the state cabinet further added to Congress’s challenges. Sukhu dismissed BJP’s attempts to create a rift within the legislative party, asserting that Congress remains united.

“I am not someone who will get scared, and I can say this with a guarantee, that the Congress is going to win when the Budget will be presented. The Budget will be passed today. The BJP is spreading rumors of my resignation. The Congress is united…Some of the MLAs who voted for BJP are in our contact,” Sukhu stated.

To address the crisis, Congress dispatched former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and DK Shivakumar to Shimla for negotiations. Shivakumar criticized the BJP’s tactics, labeling them “worrisome” for democracy and emphasizing the confidence that Congress legislators will remain loyal.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly spoke to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra regarding the developments in Himachal Pradesh. The political turmoil poses a serious threat to the stability of the Congress government in the state.
