US Reaffirms Recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian Territory Amid Chinese Claims

US Reaffirms Recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian Territory Amid Chinese Claims
  • PublishedMarch 21, 2024

The United States has reiterated its recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory, firmly opposing any unilateral attempts by China to assert territorial claims across the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Amid escalating tensions over territorial disputes, the Joe Biden administration’s stance underscores its support for India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In response to recent statements from the Chinese defence ministry reaffirming China’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh, US State Department principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the US position during a press conference. Patel stated, “The United States recognizes Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory and we strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by incursions or encroachments, military or civilian, across the Line of Actual Control.”

China has persistently contested India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh, referring to it as South Tibet, and objecting to Indian leaders’ visits to the region. Despite China’s claims, India has consistently maintained that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of its territory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh, where he inaugurated the strategically significant Sela Tunnel, further underscored India’s commitment to the region’s development and security.

The reaffirmation of US support for India’s territorial integrity comes amid ongoing tensions along the India-China border and highlights the Biden administration’s commitment to upholding international norms and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
