India Calls for Compliance with International Law Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict
  • PublishedMarch 28, 2024

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has urged Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law in its ongoing retaliation against Hamas amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. Expressing concern over civilian casualties, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of upholding human rights while addressing the Indian community in Malaysia.

Jaishankar acknowledged the October 7 attack by Hamas as an act of terrorism but emphasized the need for proportionate responses that consider international humanitarian law. He also highlighted the underlying issue of Palestinian rights and the denial of their homeland.

India has consistently advocated for a ‘two-state solution’ to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict, affirming its support for the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians.

Meanwhile, during a round-table meeting with CEOs of Malaysian companies, Jaishankar appreciated the growing interest in partnering with Indian industries, signaling opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

The October 7 attack, perpetrated by Hamas terrorists, resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, including women and children, in southern Israel. The attack also led to the hostage-taking of over 200 Israelis, many of whom remain in Hamas custody in Gaza.

In response, Israel launched a major military offensive against Hamas in Gaza, aiming to free hostages and dismantle terrorist networks. Despite a brief ceasefire in November, negotiations to end the conflict and secure the release of remaining hostages have failed. The war has claimed over 32,000 lives in Gaza, according to the Gaza ministry’s reports.
