PM Modi Criticizes DMK and Congress Over Katchatheevu Issue
  • PublishedApril 1, 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticized the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress party regarding the Katchatheevu issue, leveraging a media report based on an RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai. The report suggests that in 1974, then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had given his general acceptance to the agreement relinquishing India’s claim to the island of Katchatheevu in a meeting with Indian officials before the Centre’s announcement.

This revelation has led PM Modi to accuse the DMK of double standards and assert that they have not effectively safeguarded Tamil Nadu’s interests. He also criticized the Congress, portraying them as a self-serving family-centric entity that neglects the welfare of others.

The Katchatheevu issue has historical significance as it involves the relinquishment of an island traditionally used by Indian fishermen. Despite the 1974 agreement allowing Indian fishermen limited access to the island for religious and fishing purposes, they continue to face arrests by Sri Lankan authorities.

PM Modi’s recent remarks are part of a broader campaign strategy by the BJP to gain political traction in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The issue holds resonance among the Tamil Nadu electorate, given the charged political history between India and Sri Lanka regarding the treatment of Tamilian citizens and fishermen.
