Delhi High Court Verdict Today: Arvind Kejriwal’s Case in Spotlight
  • PublishedApril 9, 2024

The Delhi High Court is set to deliver its verdict on Tuesday, April 9, in the petition filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi excise policy case. This highly anticipated decision comes amidst ongoing controversy and legal battles surrounding the arrest.

Arvind Kejriwal, maintaining that the case against him is a “political conspiracy”, has vehemently opposed his arrest. Conversely, the ED asserts its stance, insisting on the legitimacy of Kejriwal’s arrest and his alleged involvement in the excise policy case.

During the last hearing on April 3, Kejriwal questioned the timing of his arrest, suggesting political motives ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He argued that his arrest violated the fundamental principles of the Constitution. Meanwhile, the ED countered by emphasizing equal application of the law, labeling Kejriwal as the central figure in the excise policy case.

The verdict, to be delivered by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma at 2:30 PM, will mark a significant moment in Kejriwal’s legal battle. Key points from the case highlight the intensity of legal arguments, with Kejriwal’s legal team led by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi and the ED represented by Additional Solicitor General SV Raju.

Singhvi argued that Kejriwal’s arrest was a maneuver by the Centre to stifle his political activity, challenging the arrest’s compatibility with constitutional principles. On the other hand, the ED defended its actions, asserting the rule of law and rejecting claims of immunity based on political status.

Kejriwal’s arrest on March 21 and subsequent judicial custody in Tihar Jail have sparked widespread debate and scrutiny. The outcome of today’s verdict will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications, shaping the future trajectory of this high-profile legal battle.
