“Enforcement Directorate Defends Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest Amid Allegations”
  • PublishedApril 25, 2024

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has staunchly defended its decision to arrest Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, refuting claims of malafide intentions. In response to Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest, the agency informed the Supreme Court that there were no “malafide or extraneous reasons” behind the arrest. Instead, the ED cited Kejriwal’s purported “non-cooperative attitude” as a contributing factor.

According to the ED’s affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, Kejriwal’s behavior had aided the investigating officer in establishing the necessity for the arrest. The agency argued that Kejriwal’s conduct during interrogation, characterized by evasion and non-cooperation, justified the decision for custodial interrogation.

Furthermore, the ED criticized Kejriwal for disregarding nine summonses before his arrest, exacerbating the situation. In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemned the ED’s actions, accusing the agency of manufacturing lies at the behest of their political masters, the BJP.

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in connection with a money laundering probe related to the Delhi excise policy case. Despite the Delhi High Court’s affirmation of the arrest on April 9, Kejriwal appealed to the Supreme Court, which sought a response from the ED on April 15.
