“New York Indian Film Festival to Honor Shabana Azmi’s 50-Year Cinema Journey”

The New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) is set to celebrate veteran Indian actor Shabana Azmi’s illustrious 50-year career in cinema. The festival, running from May 31 to June 2, will showcase 49 narrative, documentary, and short films, including a special screening of Azmi’s 1996 film “Fire,” directed by Deepa Mehta.

Azmi, known for her groundbreaking roles and dedication to social activism, will attend the event to reflect on her remarkable journey, from her debut in Shyam Benegal’s “Ankur” to her recent performances. The festival will highlight her contributions to Indian and international cinema, recognizing her with a special event.

Presented by the Indo-American Arts Council, the NYIFF will feature diverse films in 12 Indian languages, demonstrating the depth and range of contemporary Indian cinema. Festival director Aseem Chhabra emphasized the gala’s commitment to diversity and cultural representation, showcasing films that epitomize artistic brilliance and vibrant narratives.

The festival will open with “Dear Jassi,” directed by Indian-American filmmaker Tarsem Singh, and close with “Mrs,” starring Sanya Malhotra and directed by Arati Kadav. Notable highlights include “The Umesh Chronicles” starring Amitabh Bachchan and Vivek Gomber, and Naseeruddin Shah’s appearance in the short film “Khidki” and the documentary “Merchant Ivory.”

With premieres of feature, documentary, and short films, along with post-screening discussions and industry panels, the NYIFF continues to be a must-watch event for anyone interested in Indian cinema and its global impact.
