BJP Drops Brij Bhushan Singh, Fields Son Karan Bhushan Singh for Kaiserganj Seat Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
  • PublishedMay 2, 2024

In a significant move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replaced sitting Kaiserganj MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Brij Bhushan Singh, who served as the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, faced allegations of sexual harassment by female wrestlers, leading to his removal from candidacy.

Karan Bhushan Singh, the younger son, currently holds the position of president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association and chairperson of the Cooperative Bank in Nawabganj, Gonda district. Following the announcement, he expressed gratitude to the BJP for nominating him, stating his intention to file his nomination soon.

The decision comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Brij Bhushan Singh, who faced protests and demands for his arrest over the alleged sexual harassment charges. Notably, renowned wrestlers such as Sakhi Malik and Bajrang Punia staged protests against him, resulting in a legal case registered against Bhushan under various sections of the IPC.

Despite being a six-time MP and holding influential positions in the WFI and education sector, Brij Bhushan Singh’s candidacy was dropped by the BJP in light of the serious allegations against him.

The Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, where the election will take place on May 20, witnessed Brij Bhushan securing a significant number of votes in the previous election, but this time, the BJP’s decision reflects a shift in strategy amid the controversy.
