Canadian Minister Stands by Allegations Despite Lack of Evidence in Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case
  • PublishedMay 8, 2024

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly reiterated Ottawa’s stance on the allegations of Indian agents’ involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist, despite the absence of evidence linking New Delhi to the incident. Three Indian nationals, Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, residing in Edmonton, were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Nijjar’s death. Joly affirmed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is leading the investigation, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to protecting its citizens. The accused made their first court appearance via video, with members of the Sikh community attending the hearing in Surrey. Pro-Khalistani protesters rallied outside, blaming the Indian government for Nijjar’s killing. The court granted a no-contact order, prohibiting the accused from communicating with specific individuals. Despite the absence of evidence linking the accused to India, tensions between the two countries persist, exacerbated by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent comments at a Khalsa Day event. India has refuted Trudeau’s allegations of Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing, denouncing them as baseless.
