Paraguayan Swimmer Luana Alonso Removed from Paris Olympics for ‘Inappropriate’ Behavior

Paraguayan Swimmer Luana Alonso Removed from Paris Olympics for ‘Inappropriate’ Behavior
  • PublishedAugust 8, 2024

Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso, 20, has been removed from the Paris Olympics athletes’ village for what officials have described as “inappropriate” behavior. The incident occurred after Alonso failed to advance to the women’s 100m butterfly semifinals on July 27, missing qualification by just 0.24 seconds.

According to reports, Alonso, known for her glamour and popularity on social media, left the athletes’ village to visit Disneyland in Paris instead of staying to support her teammates. The Paraguayan Olympic Committee deemed her actions unethical, leading to her removal from the games. “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,” said Larissa Schaerer, the committee’s boss. Schaerer also noted that Alonso left the village of her own accord and did not spend the night there.

Following her removal, Alonso took to Instagram, where she has 565K followers, to announce her sudden retirement from swimming. She shared a picture of herself competing at the Olympics with the caption, “It’s official now! I’m retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support! Sorry Paraguay I only have to thank you!”

In a subsequent post, Alonso reflected on her swimming career, sharing a series of photos and expressing gratitude for the sport. “Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline, and many more,” she wrote. Alonso emphasized that this is not a goodbye but a “see you soon,” as she fondly recalled the friendships and experiences she gained through the sport.
