Excessive Carbohydrate Intake Linked to Mood Swings, Experts Warn.
A diet high in simple carbohydrates could be the culprit behind unexpected mood swings, according to health experts. The rapid spike and subsequent drop in blood glucose levels caused by simple carbs, commonly known as a “sugar crash,” can leave you feeling irritable, drowsy, and emotionally unstable.
Renowned nutritionists and health experts have highlighted the connection between diet and mood, particularly emphasizing the impact of carbohydrate consumption. Dr. Aparna Santhanam, a certified transformational coach and dermatologist, explains that carbohydrates are one of the three main macronutrients essential for energy production. However, simple carbs—found in sugars and refined foods like candies and soft drinks—are quickly digested and can cause significant fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
Edwina Raj, Head of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, notes that a diet rich in simple carbs can spike blood glucose levels and subsequently drop them, cutting off fuel to the brain and leading to poor mood responses. This phenomenon, commonly known as a “sugar crash,” can result in cognitive decline and mood instability.
To combat these effects, experts recommend focusing on a balanced diet that includes complex carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids, leafy greens, berries, probiotic-rich foods, and nuts. These foods help stabilize blood sugar levels and provide essential nutrients for brain health, ultimately promoting better mental well-being.
Women, particularly those with PCOS, are advised to be mindful of their carbohydrate intake, as it can impact both their physical and psychological health.
