China to Lift Four-Year Ban on Australian Lobster Imports by Year-End: PM Albanese.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that China will lift its four-year ban on Australian lobster imports by the end of this year, marking a significant step toward restoring trade relations between the two nations. The decision comes after a productive meeting between Albanese and Chinese Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Laos.

The ban, which was part of broader trade restrictions imposed by China in 2020, impacted Australian exports of coal, wine, and rock lobster, following diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The lobster trade resumption will be especially timely for the Chinese New Year, providing a much-needed boost to Australia’s lobster industry, particularly in regions like Geraldton, South Australia, and Tasmania.

“This is a welcome development for Australia’s lobster industry, which has faced significant challenges over the past four years. It will directly benefit our regional communities that rely on this trade,” said Prime Minister Albanese.

The lifting of restrictions on lobster is the final step in removing trade barriers that have gradually been eased as diplomatic ties improved. China’s foreign ministry has not yet commented specifically on the lobster trade resumption but reiterated its commitment to resolving issues with Australia through dialogue.

The Australian government continues to work toward strengthening trade relations and ensuring the resilience of its export industries.
