Acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has officially announced Masoom 2, the sequel to his iconic 1983 film Masoom, at the 55th International Film Festival of India. Set to begin shooting in early 2025, Masoom 2 will see the return of original stars Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, who captivated audiences with their poignant performances in the original film. Adding to the star cast, the sequel will feature the acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee.
During a press conference, Kapur shared a touching incident where he left the script on his flight, only for it to be returned by a flight attendant with a heartfelt note, reminding him of Masoom’s special place in Indian cinema. Reflecting on this, Kapur noted, “A script that was lost comes back; it’s something predestined.”
With a fresh storyline, Masoom 2 promises to uphold the same cherished values and emotional depth of the original, which explored complex themes of family, betrayal, and forgiveness. Kapur expressed his hope to re-release Masoom in theaters, allowing a new generation to experience its legacy.
The original Masoom featured a stellar cast including Tanuja, Supriya Pathak, Saeed Jaffrey, and young talents Jugal Hansraj, Aradhana, and Urmila Matondkar, who brought to life the emotional layers of familial bonds.
