Kannada Actor Ranya Rao Arrested for Gold Smuggling; Karnataka DGP Distances Himself

Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Bengaluru International Airport for attempting to smuggle over 14 kg of gold worth ₹12.56 crore from Dubai. The DRI officials, who had been monitoring her frequent international travel, intercepted her on Monday evening and later raided her residence on Lavelle Road, recovering more gold and cash.

Karnataka DGP (State Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao, Ranya Rao’s father, distanced himself from the case, stating he was completely unaware of his daughter’s involvement. “I was shocked and devastated when I heard the news through the media. My daughter does not live with me; she stays separately with her husband. The law will take its course,” he said, asserting that his career remains unblemished.

Authorities revealed that Ranya had traveled to Dubai more than 30 times in the past year, including four trips in the last 15 days, raising suspicions. During the security check, gold bars were found ingeniously concealed inside her jacket. Reports suggest she attempted to use her father’s influence to evade scrutiny.

The DRI has taken Ranya Rao into custody, and further investigations are underway to uncover possible connections to a larger smuggling network.
