Holiday or Hindrance? CEO’s Rant on India’s Time Off Sparks National Debate
Ravikumar Tummalacharla, CEO of Hyderabad-based Cleanrooms Containments, ignited controversy after criticising India’s “overload” of holidays, claiming they stall productivity and harm the nation’s economic momentum. In a viral LinkedIn post, he pointed to over 10 holidays in April 2025 alone, arguing that frequent breaks paralyse workflow and delay progress.
“Too many holidays, no work moving,” he wrote, adding that weekends combined with public and optional holidays result in weeks of inactivity. Tummalacharla urged the government to reassess the country’s holiday calendar, arguing that China’s economic dominance is rooted in its relentless work ethic.
The post triggered a firestorm on social media, with many accusing the CEO of ignoring the importance of work-life balance. Critics pointed out that including weekends and optional holidays in his list was misleading, and warned against unfair comparisons with countries like China, which operate under vastly different political and social systems.
In response, Tummalacharla doubled down, challenging critics to adopt the mindset of job creators. “Our elders fought for food and shelter. We chase comfort and still complain,” he said. While acknowledging he wasn’t promoting 70-hour workweeks, he insisted that “too much ease dulls potential.”
Addressing suggestions that AI could bridge productivity gaps, he countered that India still depends heavily on human labour — from doctors to border guards. He concluded by asking whether holidays are truly valued for their meaning or simply seen as long weekends, urging citizens to “contribute, not just critique.”
