The sudden and violent death of former Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash has shocked the state’s law enforcement and public alike. The 1981-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was found dead in a pool of blood at his upscale HSR Layout residence in Bengaluru on Monday.
According to preliminary police reports, injuries from a sharp weapon led to excessive blood loss, resulting in his death. “It appears internal in nature,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Vikas Kumar, adding that no arrests have been made yet, and investigations are underway. Police have begun questioning his wife and daughter, while sources suggest a possible property dispute within the family.
Om Prakash, a native of Champaran in Bihar, held a master’s degree in Geology and began his IPS career as an Additional Superintendent of Police in Harapanahalli. Over the years, he served in various key positions across Karnataka, including Superintendent of Police in Ballari, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru. He also worked in the Lokayukta, Fire and Emergency Services, and the CID.
He was appointed DGP of Karnataka on March 1, 2015, and retired in 2017. Reports indicate that in the recent past, Prakash had confided in close associates about threats to his life, though these concerns remained largely private.
As investigations deepen, the case now appears to straddle personal and professional realms, with a former top cop’s tragic end raising more questions than answers.
