India Strikes Back: Pakistan’s X Account Blocked, Waters Treaty Suspended After Pahalgam Attack
  • PublishedApril 24, 2025

In the aftermath of the brutal terror attack in Baisaran near Pahalgam that left 26 civilians—25 Indians and one Nepali—dead, India has launched a sweeping diplomatic offensive against Pakistan. Accusing Islamabad of fostering cross-border terrorism, the Indian government has suspended Pakistan’s official X (formerly Twitter) account within the country.

The crackdown marks one of the strongest responses in recent years, as New Delhi also halted the long-standing Indus Waters Treaty signed in 1960, which governs water-sharing between the two nations. Furthermore, diplomatic ties have been downgraded, including the expulsion of Pakistani military attachés.

Wednesday’s decisions were finalized in an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Among the major outcomes was the immediate closure of the Integrated Check Post at Attari—the key land crossing between India and Pakistan.

India has also withdrawn travel privileges previously extended to Pakistani nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES). All SVES visas already issued to Pakistani citizens have now been revoked.

The Pahalgam attack, the deadliest on civilians in Kashmir in over two decades, targeted tourists enjoying the serene beauty of the region. The nation remains in mourning, with stories of honeymooning couples and narrowly escaped families dominating headlines.

As public anger intensifies, India’s actions reflect a zero-tolerance stance against terrorism, especially when linked to its volatile border regions. The diplomatic fallout is expected to ripple through South Asian geopolitics in the days ahead.
