Nation Stands United as Pahalgam Terror Attack Leaves 26 Dead
India is reeling from one of the deadliest terror attacks in recent times, as 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator were brutally murdered in a 10-minute assault at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Kashmir. According to security sources, a group of 5–6 terrorists, armed with rifles and possibly equipped with bodycams, opened indiscriminate fire on unsuspecting tourists around 1:50 PM on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses describe chilling details — terrorists emerging from pine forests, approaching families enjoying scenic beauty, and asking victims their religion before shooting them, many with headshots. Survivors believe delayed emergency response led to avoidable loss of life.
This horrific attack took place while US Vice President JD Vance was visiting India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was abroad in Saudi Arabia. The Prime Minister has since returned and assured the nation that “those behind this heinous act will not be spared.”
In response, the Indian government has taken strong diplomatic steps. The Cabinet Committee on Security has suspended the Indus Water Treaty, shut down the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and revoked travel under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals. Defence officials in the Pakistani High Commission have been declared Persona Non Grata, with staff reduction to follow by May 1.
The nation mourns this grave tragedy even as it reaffirms its resolve against terrorism. The government and citizens alike stand united in demanding justice.
