He Died Saving Others’: Brave Pony Handler Becomes Symbol of Humanity in Pahalgam Tragedy
  • PublishedApril 25, 2025

Amid the bloodshed of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, the story of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local pony handler from Anantnag, has emerged as a powerful testament to courage and selflessness. Adil, the eldest son and only breadwinner of his family, was gunned down while reportedly shielding tourists and attempting to disarm one of the attackers.

His father, Syed Hyder Shah, spoke through tears and pride: “I am alive only because of the pride in my son’s shahadat. Otherwise, I would have died seeing his lifeless body.” Adil’s final day started like any other, ferrying tourists on ponies through Pahalgam’s serene trails. By afternoon, chaos erupted. The family’s worst fears were confirmed after his phone went silent and they located his body at a hospital.

Adil was shot four times—three bullets in the chest and one in the throat—while trying to protect innocents. His mother, devastated, mourned her son’s absence from the dinner table, saying, “He earned ₹300 a day. Now, who will feed us?”

Locals have hailed Adil as a hero. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who visited the grieving family, praised his bravery and promised full government support. “He tried to stop the attack. We must stand by this family,” Abdullah said.

In a region scarred by violence, Adil’s final act reminds the world of Kashmir’s quiet heroes who choose humanity over fear—even in their final moments.
