Massive Blast Rocks Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port Amid Critical US Nuclear Talks
  • PublishedApril 26, 2025

A devastating explosion tore through Iran’s Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday, injuring over 500 people and leaving several feared dead, according to state media. The blast, which shook windows kilometers away, sent a towering mushroom cloud into the sky, captured in dramatic social media footage.

Authorities said the explosion was caused by the detonation of several containers stored in the port’s wharf area. Emergency teams have been evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals, while port operations have been suspended to combat the sprawling fire.

Located roughly 1,050 kilometers southeast of Tehran along the Strait of Hormuz—a strategic chokepoint handling 20% of the world’s oil trade—Shahid Rajaee port is a critical hub. Its disruption raises fresh concerns over regional stability.

This incident comes at a sensitive moment as Iran engages in a third round of nuclear negotiations with the United States in Oman. Talks, led by US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, aim to forge a new deal preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief.

Araghchi voiced “cautious optimism,” though warned against “impractical” American demands. Meanwhile, technical teams, including US State Department policy chief Michael Anton and Iran’s Kazem Gharibabadi, are working behind the scenes.

Notably, Shahid Rajaee port was previously targeted by a suspected Israeli cyberattack in 2020. The cause of Saturday’s deadly explosion remains under investigation.
