PM Modi Unlikely to Attend G7 Summit in Canada Amid Strained Bilateral Ties
  • PublishedJune 2, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada, scheduled from June 15 to 17, marking the first time in six years that he would miss the high-profile event. Sources have indicated that ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada are a key factor behind this decision.

According to officials, no formal invitation has been extended to India by the Canadian side for this year’s summit, nor has New Delhi shown interest in participating under the current circumstances. Sources emphasized that significant improvement in bilateral relations is essential before any such high-level visit can be considered.

The strained ties stem from recent diplomatic frictions and unresolved issues, with sources also citing security concerns surrounding a potential visit by the Indian Prime Minister.

The G7 Summit is an informal gathering of the world’s most industrialized nations — France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada — along with the European Union. This year’s invitees reportedly include South Africa, Ukraine, and Australia.

When asked previously about Prime Minister Modi’s participation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had stated, on two separate occasions last month, that it had “no information” to share regarding any such visit.

Given the current state of India-Canada relations, it appears increasingly unlikely that PM Modi will travel to Canada for the G7 Summit this year.
