Karnataka High Court Criticises Kamal Haasan Over Kannada Remark During Thug Life Plea Hearing

Karnataka High Court Criticises Kamal Haasan Over Kannada Remark During Thug Life Plea Hearing
  • PublishedJune 3, 2025

The Karnataka High Court strongly criticised actor Kamal Haasan on Monday during the hearing of his plea seeking protection for the release and screening of his upcoming film Thug Life in the state. The court expressed concern over Haasan’s refusal to apologise for his controversial statement claiming, “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” which sparked widespread backlash and protests across Karnataka.

Justice M Nagaprasanna questioned Haasan’s stance and the responsibility he holds as a public figure. “No citizen has the right to hurt sentiments,” the judge stated, emphasising that water, land, and language — Jala, Nila, Bashe — are deeply connected to public emotion. He further asked, “Are you a historian or a linguist?” criticising the basis of Haasan’s remarks.

Representing the film’s producer, senior advocate Dhyan Chinappa clarified that the comment wasn’t meant to offend and should be viewed in context. However, the court questioned the intent, adding, “Why should the film run in Karnataka if there’s no apology?”

Justice Nagaprasanna stated that one simple apology could have defused the tension. The court also remarked on the irony of seeking police protection for unrest caused by the petitioner himself.

While the court has not yet passed a ruling, it urged Kamal Haasan to reconsider his decision and issue an apology. The hearing was adjourned to 2:30 PM. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister responded, “Hope Kamal listens to the court. But we also shouldn’t be too adamant.”
