Akal Takht Head Granthi’s Remarks Spark Outrage Amid YouTuber Kanchan Kumari Murder Probe

Giani Malkit Singh, the head granthi of Akal Takht Sahib, has stirred controversy with remarks appearing to justify the murder of popular Punjabi YouTuber and influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as Kamal Kaur or ‘Queen’. While speaking to reporters, Singh stated that those who “defame religions through vulgarity” must be stopped, adding, “Nothing wrong has happened” when referring to her killing.

The 27-year-old influencer was found dead inside a parked car at Adesh Medical University in Bathinda on June 11. Her body was decomposed, and early investigations suggest she may have been killed elsewhere and moved to the location. The car used to conceal the body had fake number plates.

Kumari, a resident of Ludhiana with over 3.8 lakh Instagram followers, was known for her bold and explicit social media content, which had previously drawn threats, including one in 2024 from Canada-based designated terrorist Arsh Dalla.

Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal confirmed that four individuals have been linked to the crime, including alleged mastermind Amritpal Singh Mehron, who fled to the UAE after the incident. Two suspects, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, have been arrested, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining accused.

Singh’s comments have sparked condemnation, with critics saying religious leaders must uphold justice and not appear to condone violence. Police continue to investigate all leads, including potential extremist involvement and prior threats made against the victim.
