Muzaffar Ali Says ‘Umrao Jaan’ Can’t Be Recreated: “Rekha Is Not Easy to Find”
  • PublishedJune 17, 2025

As the 1981 cinematic gem Umrao Jaan prepares for its theatrical re-release in stunning 4K on June 27, director Muzaffar Ali has ruled out any possibility of remaking the cult classic. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Ali reflected on why he believes the original remains unmatched and irreplaceable.

“Rekha is not easy to find!” Ali said, praising the legendary actress’s unparalleled performance and the deep commitment she brought to the character. “What she did, no one else can do today. Every person in the film was as real as Rekha, and she, too, became part of that milieu.”

Ali credited the film’s magic to the layered collaboration between writer Shahryar, composer Khayyam, choreographer Kumudini Lakhia, singer Asha Bhosle, and a dedicated cast including Farooq Shaikh and Naseeruddin Shah. He emphasized that Umrao Jaan was created with passion, not just budget — a quality he finds missing in modern reinterpretations.

Reflecting on previous remake attempts, including the 2006 version starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ali said, “It can’t be recreated. Others have tried and failed. Closure is important — you can’t make it better than this.”

The restored Umrao Jaan is set to re-release via PVR Inox’s Curated Shows initiative. Alongside the screening, Muzaffar Ali will also launch a commemorative coffee table book, featuring rare archival content and reflections from Rekha, Naseeruddin Shah, and others involved in the timeless masterpiece.
