History Made! Canada’s First-Ever University Course on Diljit Dosanjh Drops in 2026
Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Creative School is set to make history with the launch of Canada’s first university-level course on Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh. The announcement, made at the Billboard Summit during NXNE 2025, marks a milestone in both academia and Punjabi pop culture.
Launching in Fall 2026, the course will explore Diljit’s musical innovations, lyrical themes, cross-cultural collaborations, and digital presence, positioning him not just as a celebrated artist, but as a cultural ambassador. It will also examine how Punjabi regional sounds are influencing global pop culture and empowering diasporic communities worldwide.
“Diljit Dosanjh’s journey is the perfect example of how culture, identity, and music intersect on a global stage,” said Dr. Charlie Wall-Andrews, Assistant Professor at The Creative School.
Diljit has broken numerous records, becoming the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella (2023), and the first turbaned performer on the Met Gala red carpet (2024). His Netflix film Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali, won critical acclaim and showcased his acting depth beyond music.
The course reflects TMU’s response to the growing interest in South Asian arts and culture, especially as Punjabi music continues to rise internationally. It also underscores a larger shift in education — recognizing non-Western artists and narratives in mainstream academia.
This first-of-its-kind course in North America not only honors Diljit’s legacy but also opens doors for future studies in world music, cultural entrepreneurship, and diaspora identity.
With over 14 albums and 50+ singles, Diljit’s influence continues to transcend borders — and now, it’s officially entering the classroom.
