Who is Arya Rajendran – India’s Youngest Mayor Cited by NYC Mayoral Winner Zohran Mamdani
Arya Rajendran, the 21-year-old Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has recently gained international attention after being cited by Zohran Mamdani, the newly victorious Democratic candidate for New York City Mayor. In 2020, Mamdani shared a Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) post praising Rajendran, highlighting her as an example of the kind of youthful, progressive leadership NYC could benefit from.
Arya Rajendran made history as India’s youngest mayor when she was elected in 2020 at just 21 years old, breaking previous records. A Mathematics graduate and prominent CPI(M) leader, she hails from Kerala’s influential Nair community and has been active in politics since childhood, rising through CPI(M)’s youth wings including Balasangham and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).
Rajendran is married to Sachin Dev, the youngest CPI(M) MLA in Kerala. Her tenure as mayor has focused on practical urban issues like waste management, healthcare accessibility, and promoting scientific waste disposal. She gained national attention in 2023 when a photo of her working while caring for her one-month-old baby went viral, symbolizing her dedication and modern leadership style.
Zohran Mamdani, son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, praised Rajendran’s leadership qualities on social media, connecting her youthful and socialist approach with his vision for New York City’s future. Mamdani, a self-avowed socialist, won the Democratic primary and will contest the final mayoral election in November.
Arya Rajendran stands as a symbol of young, progressive political leadership in India and now inspires political discourse beyond its borders.
