Kolkata Law College Gangrape Sparks Outrage; Three Arrested Including Trinamool Student Leader
A 24-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College on Wednesday evening, triggering a wave of public and political outrage. Three accused — Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukherjee (20) — have been arrested. Mishra is a former student and currently a general secretary in the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm after the woman had arrived at the college to fill out exam-related forms. In her complaint, she detailed that she was locked inside the campus, threatened, and gangraped in the security guard room. She alleged that the accused recorded the act and threatened to leak the footage if she resisted. A preliminary medical exam has been conducted and the crime scene secured for forensic investigation.
The incident has become a political flashpoint. While Trinamool condemned the crime and assured justice, BJP leaders launched scathing criticism, sharing images of the main accused with senior party members. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari blamed the absence of city police and questioned the state’s priorities.
Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee called the crime “shameful” but added that police presence in colleges isn’t practical.
As public pressure mounts, all eyes remain on the investigation and the administration’s next steps to ensure justice and restore faith in campus safety.
