Language Row Escalates in Thane as MNS Workers Detained Amid Protest March

Tensions flared in Maharashtra’s Thane district on Tuesday as several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers, including senior leaders, were detained during a planned protest rally. The rally was intended to counter an earlier protest staged by Gujarati traders following the assault of a food stall owner who allegedly did not speak Marathi.

The MNS rally, led by Thane and Palghar chief Avinash Jadhav, was scheduled to proceed from Mira Bhayander towards Mumbai, despite the absence of police permission. However, heavy police deployment thwarted the plans early, with Jadhav and other key leaders being detained as early as 3:30 AM. This sparked sharp criticism from the party.

MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande condemned the early morning detentions, calling the situation “Emergency-like.” “Police are allowing Gujarati traders to protest freely, but are not giving the same rights to Marathi people. Is this Maharashtra or Gujarat’s government?” Deshpande questioned.

The rally and subsequent detentions brought traffic in parts of Thane to a standstill, with heavy police presence causing further disruption. The MNS has vowed to continue its movement, accusing the government of bias and suppressing the voice of Marathi-speaking citizens.

The incident underscores rising linguistic and regional tensions in the state and is expected to intensify the debate over language rights, freedom of expression, and political favoritism. Authorities have yet to officially comment on the future course of action.
