Sharp Decline in Indian Student Visas to the US Amid Processing Crisis
  • PublishedJuly 19, 2025

Indian student visa approvals to the United States have seen a dramatic drop of 70–80% in 2024, as ongoing visa appointment delays and rising rejection rates leave thousands of aspiring students in limbo. Education consultants across India, particularly in Hyderabad, report a steep decline in outbound student traffic, as frustration builds over non-transparent and delayed visa slot releases.

“Normally by this time, students are preparing to fly. This year, they’re still stuck refreshing the visa portal,” said Sanjeev Rai of Hyderabad Overseas Consultant.

Students who did manage to secure slots are facing confirmation delays or visa rejections under Section 214(b), which refers to insufficient proof of intent to return to India. Consultants note that even well-qualified applicants with clean records are being denied.

Arvind Manduva of I20 Fever stated, “If slots don’t open soon, we risk shattering thousands of dreams.” Many students are now shifting their focus to other destinations like Germany and Canada.

The US Consulate General in Hyderabad confirmed slots have resumed, urging students to monitor their website and apply early, citing enhanced vetting and national security considerations.

In 2023, India surpassed China in sending over 3.3 lakh students to the US. But this year’s visa disruptions could reverse that trend, as more Indian students look toward Europe for higher education.
