Supreme Court Issues Notice on Illegal Tree Felling Amid North India Flood Crisis

Supreme Court Issues Notice on Illegal Tree Felling Amid North India Flood Crisis
  • PublishedSeptember 4, 2025

The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the devastating floods sweeping across several north Indian states and the national capital, linking the calamity to unchecked illegal tree felling and unregulated exploitation of natural resources.

In a strong observation, Chief Justice BR Gavai cautioned that rampant environmental violations are now surfacing as large-scale natural disasters, underscoring the urgent need to maintain equilibrium between development and ecological protection. “We have seen unprecedented rains and flooding. Prima facie, it appears that illegal felling of trees has taken place. It appears to be a very serious issue,” he said.

The Court issued notices to the Centre and four states—Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir—seeking their response. Highlighting the extent of the disaster, the Chief Justice remarked that entire fields and villages in Punjab have been wiped out by floods.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the Supreme Court reiterated that while developmental needs are vital, they cannot come at the cost of ecological balance. The Court’s intervention comes as flash floods, triggered by record rainfall, continue to displace thousands and destroy infrastructure across the northern belt.

The matter has now been listed for urgent hearing, with the apex court expected to lay down measures to prevent further environmental degradation and ensure stricter enforcement of existing laws.
