Nepal Bans 26 Unregistered Social Media Platforms, Including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram
  • PublishedSeptember 5, 2025

In a landmark move to tighten digital governance, the Government of Nepal has officially banned 26 unregistered social media platforms, including widely used platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

According to officials, the decision comes as part of the newly introduced digital compliance policy, requiring all social media platforms operating within the country to register with regulatory authorities. The government emphasized that this measure aims to enhance online accountability, safeguard user data, and curb the misuse of digital spaces for misinformation, hate speech, and other unlawful activities.

Authorities stated that platforms failing to comply with registration norms will no longer be allowed to operate in Nepal. Citizens who attempt to use these banned applications may also face restricted access, as internet service providers have been instructed to block them.

While the government has described the ban as a necessary step for ensuring digital security and sovereignty, the decision has triggered mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a step toward protecting users and regulating harmful content, whereas critics argue it may limit freedom of expression and restrict global connectivity.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority confirmed that discussions with major global tech companies are ongoing, and platforms willing to comply with registration requirements may be reinstated in the near future.

This unprecedented move positions Nepal among the few countries in the region taking strong regulatory action against unregistered social media platforms.
