Support Pours in for Indian Restaurant Owners in UK After Diners Skip Paying Bill

Raman Kaur and Narinder Singh Athwa, owners of Sai Surbhi, a family-run Indian restaurant in Greater Manchester, have received overwhelming support from the public after revealing that a group of diners walked out without paying a bill of £200 (approximately Rs 23,600).

The incident occurred on August 30, when four adults and four children dined at the restaurant. The group promised to return the following day with the payment and agreed to have CCTV footage shared if they failed to do so. The owners’ social media post detailing the ordeal quickly went viral, garnering hundreds of supportive comments urging action and encouraging local patronage.

Social media users suggested releasing CCTV footage, informing the police, and warning other businesses. Many also expressed empathy for the family-run establishment, highlighting the financial strain such incidents impose. “As a local family-run business and an independent, times are really tough at the minute, and them not paying a £200 bill has a huge knock-on effect for our restaurant,” the owners noted, emphasizing that the amount could have covered staff wages, bills, or stock.

Despite the incident, the owners have refrained from revealing the diners’ identities, stressing the importance of not stereotyping customers and acknowledging the many regular patrons from the same community.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by small, independent restaurants, while the public support highlights the community spirit in Greater Manchester, rallying behind local businesses during difficult times.
