Cloudburst in Dehradun Leaves Two Missing, Relief Operations Intensified
  • PublishedSeptember 16, 2025

A devastating cloudburst triggered by heavy rainfall struck Dehradun in the early hours of Tuesday, washing away cars, shops, and homes, and leaving two people missing. Rescue teams, including NDRF, SDRF, PWD, and local police, immediately rushed to the spot and are carrying out intensive search and rescue operations. District Magistrate Savin Bansal and SDM Kumkum Joshi are monitoring the situation on-site, ensuring affected families are shifted to safer locations.

In response, all schools in Dehradun from Classes 1 to 12 have been closed as a precautionary measure. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured citizens that he is in constant touch with district authorities, tweeting that relief and rescue efforts are being carried out on a war footing.

The impact of the cloudburst extended beyond Dehradun, with the Chandrabhaga river in Rishikesh swelling dangerously, trapping three individuals who were later rescued by the SDRF. Landslides in Pithoragarh and other districts have further disrupted traffic and connectivity across the hill state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who recently visited Uttarakhand to review disaster management measures, announced a ₹1,200 crore relief package for flood-affected areas. Additional compensation includes ₹2 lakh for families of victims and ₹50,000 for the injured. Special provisions under PM CARES will support children orphaned by recent natural calamities.

The Prime Minister also lauded the courage of NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers working tirelessly in difficult conditions to safeguard lives. Relief and rehabilitation efforts continue on an urgent basis.
