From Crown to Combat: Two Women Redefine Courage in Olive Green

Lieutenant Kashish Methwani, crowned Miss International India 2023, traded pageantry and global academic opportunities for a career in the armed forces. Commissioned into the Army’s Air Defence Regiment on September 6, after rigorous training at the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) Chennai, the Pune native embodies the fusion of intellect, discipline, and patriotism. A biotechnology graduate with research experience at IISc Bengaluru, Kashish turned down a PhD offer from Harvard, affirming her long-cherished dream of joining the Army. “Pageantry was a passion, but never a long-term career. The Army was where I truly belonged,” she said.

Equally inspiring is the journey of Lieutenant Priyanka Nilesh Khot from Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Widowed after the sudden demise of her husband, Naik Nilesh Khot of the Signals Corps, Priyanka transformed grief into strength. Leaving behind her role as a teacher and enduring the sacrifice of training away from her young daughter, she emerged victorious, donning the same uniform her husband once wore. Her commissioning was celebrated in her village as a symbol of resilience and legacy.

Together, Kashish and Priyanka represent two extraordinary stories of sacrifice, transformation, and service — one moving from crown to combat, the other from widowhood to warriorhood. Their journeys underscore the indomitable spirit of India’s women officers, who continue to break barriers while putting the nation first.
