The Delhi High Court on Thursday questioned Priya Kapur’s plea seeking permission to file a list of late businessman Sanjay Kapur’s personal assets and liabilities in a sealed cover. The application was filed as part of an ongoing inheritance dispute involving actor Karisma Kapoor’s children, who claim a share in their late father’s assets.
Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, representing Priya Kapur, argued that the details include sensitive financial information that could cause irreparable harm if publicly disclosed. The plea requested either filing under strict confidentiality or establishing a “Confidentiality Club” to limit access. However, the court raised concerns that sealed proceedings could restrict the heirs’ rights to verify and challenge the asset details. “The whole suit cannot be in a sealed cover,” the bench observed, emphasizing that beneficiaries have a legal right to scrutinize and question the estate.
Counsel for Karisma Kapoor’s children insisted that asset details remain largely public, while Senior Advocate Amit Sibal, representing Sunjay Kapur’s mother and a Class 1 heir, highlighted the need for full access to independently verify the will.
Additionally, Rani Kapur filed a separate application seeking directions to obtain a copy of the Will dated March 21, 2025. The court adjourned both matters to the following day, inviting counsels to propose a method to maintain confidentiality without infringing on the rights of any party.
The proceedings underscore the delicate balance between privacy in high-profile inheritance cases and the legal rights of heirs to access crucial asset information.
