CBI Arrests Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar on Bribery Charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Harcharan Singh Bhullar, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Ropar Range, Punjab Police, in connection with a corruption case involving bribery. The arrest took place on Thursday afternoon at Bhullar’s office in Mohali, Punjab, where CBI officers apprehended him while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh. The complaint leading to the operation was lodged by a dealer from Mandi Gobindgarh, Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Bhullar was allegedly extorting a monthly payment of ₹5 lakh from a local scrap dealer in connection with an ongoing case. Along with the DIG, one private individual has also been taken into custody. To ensure complete impartiality, no Punjab Police personnel on deputation were included in the CBI’s operation.

Searches were conducted at Bhullar’s office, residence, and another identified location. The arrested officer was briefly taken to Panchkula in Haryana for procedural formalities before being brought back for further questioning.

DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, a 2007-batch IPS officer and son of former Punjab DGP Mehal Singh Bhullar, had assumed charge of the Ropar Range on November 27, 2024. Senior Punjab Police officials have not issued any statement regarding the matter. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be shared as information becomes available.
