Court Orders Removal of Deepfake Video Targeting Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday announced that a Mohali court has directed the removal of an AI-generated deepfake video maligning Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann from all online platforms.

In a statement, AAP said, “An AI deepfake video of Punjab CM is being shared by right-wing trolls. This is a fake video, and the court has issued directions to remove it.” The order, issued on October 22, instructs Facebook and Google to take down all offensive material and preserve digital records to ensure the evidence remains intact.

The development follows a police investigation initiated after the Punjab State Crime Police registered a case on October 21 against Jagman Samra, a Canada-based individual, for uploading “vulgar and unlawful” content with the intent to instigate enmity among communities. The posts, detected by the state’s social media monitoring cell, were found to contain malicious and fabricated material designed to disrupt public harmony.

According to the official complaint filed by Inspector Gaganpreet Singh, the content had the potential to incite hatred and social discord. A case has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 340(2), 352(1), 353(2), 351(2), 336(4), and Section 67 of the IT Act.

AAP welcomed the court’s swift intervention, reiterating the need for stronger measures against the misuse of AI and digital platforms to spread misinformation and defame public figures.
