Rashtriya Ekta Diwas: PM Modi Pays Tribute to Sardar Patel, Says Nehru Blocked His Effort to Fully Integrate Kashmir
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Statue of Unity on his 150th birth anniversary, marking Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day). Addressing the gathering after reviewing the Unity Day parade in Ekta Nagar, PM Modi said Sardar Patel’s vision of a united India extended to the entire Kashmir region, but former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru did not allow that to happen.
“Sardar Patel wanted to unite the entire Kashmir, just as he did with other princely states, but Nehru ji stopped his wish from being fulfilled. Kashmir was divided, given a separate Constitution and flag — and the nation suffered for decades because of Congress’ mistake,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting Patel’s historic role in uniting over 550 princely states after Independence, Mr. Modi said, “Sardar Patel believed we should not waste time writing history but work to create it. His vision of ‘One India, Excellent India’ remains our guiding force.”
The National Unity Day parade this year featured contingents of police and paramilitary forces — all commanded by women officers — including BSF, CISF, ITBP, CRPF, and SSB. Ten thematic floats showcased India’s diversity, while 900 artists performed classical dances celebrating the nation’s cultural richness.
Key attractions included the BSF’s camel contingent, Gujarat Police’s horse unit, and an aerial display by the Indian Air Force under Operation Surya Kiran. The parade also honoured gallantry awardees from CRPF and BSF for their exceptional bravery.
