Panjab University (PU) has announced the postponement of all examinations scheduled for November 18 to 20, following escalating student protests demanding the announcement of the long-pending Senate election schedule.
In an official statement, PU Controller of Examinations Jagat Bhushan confirmed that the revised dates for the postponed exams will be communicated shortly. Students have been advised to regularly monitor official university platforms for updates.
The decision comes as student organisations, led by the Panjab University Bachao Morcha, continue their agitation near the Vice-Chancellor’s office. The students have declared they will boycott examinations and prevent them from being conducted until the Senate poll schedule is announced. Despite a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor on November 12 — where students claim they were assured that the schedule sent to the Chancellor would be approved soon — the unrest has continued.
The protests began in opposition to the Centre’s October 28 notification proposing restructuring of PU’s governing bodies. Although the Ministry of Education withdrew the notification on November 7 following pressure from political leaders and student groups, the protesters have intensified their demand for immediate Senate elections, which have been pending for over a year.
Several political parties, including AAP, SAD, Congress, and farmers’ unions such as SKM and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha, have extended support to the students.
SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, after meeting with the protesters, called for a united political stand to protect the autonomy and identity of Panjab University, asserting that Punjabis will not allow the institution to be “taken away” from the state.
