The counting of votes for the Punjab Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections commenced at 8:00 a.m. on Monday across 154 counting centres in 141 locations throughout the state. Early trends indicate that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is gaining ground, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken the lead in key districts including Ludhiana and Sangrur.
These rural local body elections witnessed a massive contest, with over 9,000 candidates in the fray for 347 Zila Parishad seats and 2,838 Panchayat Samiti seats. Owing to the use of ballot papers, the counting process is expected to continue late into the night before final results are declared.
The elections were conducted in a highly charged political atmosphere, coming just 14 months ahead of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections. Unlike some previous local polls, all major political parties contested on their official election symbols, underlining the strategic importance of these elections in shaping the political narrative ahead of the Assembly polls.
During polling, opposition parties raised allegations of obstruction, claiming that their workers and polling agents were prevented from reaching polling stations in certain areas. In Patiala, SAD workers accused AAP leaders of attempting to stop their polling agents from accessing booths along the Nabha Road. These allegations added to the tense political climate surrounding the elections.
The rural local body polls are widely seen as a crucial political barometer, reflecting grassroots sentiment and organizational strength of parties as they prepare for the upcoming Assembly elections. Final results are awaited, which are expected to provide clearer insights into the shifting political dynamics across Punjab.
