Ghagga Panchayat Takes Strong Measures Against Theft, Snatching, and Drug-Peddling
The panchayat of Ghagga village in Muktsar district has taken a strong stand against rising incidents of theft, snatching, and drug-related activities by passing a landmark resolution aimed at curbing crime and ensuring community safety.
Under the resolution, any individual found supporting offenders or standing as surety for their bail will face a fine of Rs 50,000. In addition, the panchayat has introduced provisions for social boycott, making it clear that the community will not tolerate any form of complicity in criminal activities.
Ravinder Kaur, Sarpanch of Ghagga village, stated, “With the onset of winter, we have noticed a sharp increase in thefts, especially the theft of water motors from agricultural fields. The panchayat has unanimously resolved to take strict action against individuals who support offenders, either directly or indirectly, to maintain law and order and protect the community.”
This resolution follows a growing trend in Punjab’s villages where local governing bodies are taking proactive steps against crime. Earlier, the panchayat of Shamkhera village in Muktsar had issued a stern warning to drug peddlers, making them solely responsible for the consequences of their actions, while the community would refrain from intervening in legal matters. Similarly, the panchayat of Balloh village in Bathinda district had passed a resolution banning the sale of tobacco products, with violators liable to a fine of Rs 5,000.
The Ghagga panchayat’s decisive measures reflect the community’s commitment to safety, accountability, and social responsibility. By imposing both financial penalties and social consequences, the village leadership aims to deter criminal activities and encourage residents to actively participate in maintaining a secure and peaceful environment.
