When it comes to films featuring massive stars with no storyline and b grade action the budgets spent are behemoth. But the problem arrives when content driven films are often sidelined and are not considered as a profitable venture.  It is when the directors decide to go independent or to do with what they have. They not only go creative but also create gems. Here are 5 recommendations for you all.

 

1. LIPSTICK UNDER MY BURKHA


In order to be independent and break free from the conservative society, four women sets on a journey to discover freedom and happiness.

The film holds a rating of 6.8 on IMDb

The film has won so many international awards but sadly it got it's feet dirty in its own homeland.  The film got embroiled in a lot of controversies with the CBFC and after a few cuts the film was allowed to get a theatrical release.

The film has amazing stories interwoven with each other. I love Ratna Pathak's track. All the actresses have excelled in their respective roles. The film is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and surely deserves a watch.

2. INDU SARKAR

Indu Sarkar is set during the emergency period between 1975 to 1977 declared by Prime Minister Indra Gandhi.

The film holds a rating of 6  on IMDb

Watch it for two reasons its gripping premise and Kirti Kulhari's performance.

The film was widely criticized and got involved in political controversies and didn't get what it deserves.

3. POSHAM PA

Based on true events, the story revolves around a psychologically disturbed mother who coerces her daughters into a life of crime. Their case becomes a national sensation in India, overnight, these women are monsters personified.

The film holds a rating of 6.3 on IMDb

Serial killers and that too women . It's a concept that many directors,  producers don't dare to touch because they can presume the fate of the film but if they decide to stay true to a story irrespective of how it would fare at the box office then you create films like these.

I won't reveal much about the film but this one will haunt you.  Sayani Gupta, Ragini Khanna, Mahie Gill are gems.

4. PARCHED

In the arid landscape of Rajasthan, four women navigate their way through personal and cultural difficulties.

The film holds a rating of 7.5 on IMDb

This is one of the best films in the Indian Cinema. A script so well written and executed is a rare combination to find but this one ticks all the columns right.

The film stars  Tannistha Chatterjee,  Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla, Lehar Khan and the performances are the biggest winners of the film.  Leena Yadav excells in  the craft of direction.

5. SONI

While fighting crimes against women in Delhi, a short-fused policewoman and her level-headed female boss grapple with gender issues in their own lives.

The  film holds a rating of 7.2 on IMDb

Delhi captured like Delhi. The insecurities that one can feel in the city can be felt in this film.  The film has long shots. The film takes its time and pace to set and it does an extraordinary job in getting that ambiance right.

The film is directed by Ivan Ayr
